Our vision

Ashton Memorial As the students that make up Lancaster University Christian Union (LUCU), we believe that our clear call is to partner with God in his rescue mission to students.

LUCU is a ‘mission team’ of Christian students working at the heart of Lancaster University, living for Jesus and speaking for Jesus. We are committed to making disciples of Jesus Christ from all nations on our campus, and to making a godly impact in every sphere of university life.

Students are the best-placed to reach other students for Christ. As a student-led team, we believe that we have been given by God maximum access to students and maximum integrity with university and college authorities. As students, we seek to use maximum creativity in reaching out with the timeless gospel of God as we live and speak for Jesus on campus. We want our CU mission team to be prayerful, properly engaged with university life and creative in reaching others for Christ.

LUCU is affiliated to and supported by the Universities and Colleges Christian Fellowship (UCCF). Our Staff Worker, Peter Dray, and Relay Worker are there to keep the CU envisioned and resourced as we reach out. We also encourage all CU students to be properly involved in the life of a local church here in Lancaster.

Our Tuesday night central meeting is where the CU mission team meets to pray together, to receive teaching and training relevant to our witness, to support one another, and to plan together, all with a view to going ... to reach others through personal witness, evangelistic Bible study, our international student ministry, small groups (including ‘Go’ events) and other evangelistic events.

Along with other CUs on campuses up and down the country, we have the following values:

  • We are outward-looking – we are first and foremost a missionary community, with a vision for students from all nations on our campuses and throughout the world.
  • We are evangelical – we are committed to celebrating, uniting in, and sharing in the liberating truth of the gospel as summarised in our Doctrinal Basis.
  • We are inter-denominational – we are a mission team of believers drawn from many and diverse church backgrounds, committed to working together in gospel unity with a shared vision, strategy and values.
  • We are committed to the local church – we promote involvement in the local church as the lifelong and primary place of Christian community, teaching, discipleship, pastoral care and ministry ... and involvement in a Christian Union as a short-term ‘workplace’ mission team on campus, the missionary arm of local churches (both those at home and those in Lancaster) on campus.
